ASEAN-Japan 50th Anniversary Symposium for Promoting Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture and Food System through Innovation

DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research director Junel B. Soriano and assistant director Joell H. Lales attend the ASEAN-Japan 50th Anniversary Symposium for Promoting Resilient and Sustainable Agriculture and Food System through Innovation in Jakarta, Indonesia on 21 November 2023. Attending as well are DA assistant secretary for Policy Research and Development Noel A. Padre and  DA-International Affairs Division senior foreign affairs research specialist Abigail Amestoso.

During the opening program, Dr. Soriano raised with the group the need to provide and sustain support to small farmers, enabling them to become more supportive of ASEAN initiatives such as adopting technologies to mitigate the impact of climate change.

With regard to the ASEAN-Japan MIDORI Cooperation Plan (MCP), Soriano shared that it will be an opportunity for both professionals and students from the DA and state universities and colleges in the Philippines if the MCP will expand its doors to the country and extend capacity building support.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan, in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat and with the backing of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, is jointly hosting this symposium. The event aims to disseminate current policy initiatives, knowledge, and technologies pertaining to the development of resilient and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Its overarching goal is to enhance food security in the region.
