Introduction of the One CGIAR Portfolio-Philippines

“We need to address complex and interrelated challenges we are currently facing by leveraging on research for development opportunities created from all ends”, said DA-BAR assistant director for Programs Joell H. Lales. He delivered his opening remarks on behalf of DA-BAR director Junel B. Soriano during the introduction of the One Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Portfolio-Philippines held on 12 July 2022 at Luxent Hotel, Quezon City.

The event introduced the five Initiatives under the five Impact Areas of Nutrition, Health, and Food Security; Poverty Reduction, Livelihoods, and Jobs; Gender Equality, Youth, and Social Inclusion; Climate Adaptation and Mitigation; and Environmental Health and Biodiversity.

Taking off from the discussion, CGIAR centers in partnership with R&D partners and stakeholders mentioned that the five iniatives are: 1) Fruit and Vegetables for Sustainable Healthy Diets; 2) ClimBeR: Building Systemic Resilience Against Climate Variability and Extremes; 3) Resilient Cities Through Sustainable Urban and Peri-Urban Agrifood Systems; 4) Plant Health and Rapid Response to Protect Food Security and Livelihoods; and 5) Excellence in Agronomy for Sustainable Intensification and Climate Change Adaptation.

CGIAR initiatives primarily focuses on improving food and nutrition security for the world's most vulnerable people, and lifting millions out of poverty.

Other key participants from the department include DA-Agricultural Training Institute director Rosana P. Mula, Director and Field Operations Service OIC director Bernadette F. San Juan, and DA-BAR International R4D Relations Unit head Jay Invinsor L. Bermas.
