DA-BAR reviews 9 rice R4D projects

To assess the accomplishments of projects supported under the research for development program for rice, the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research conducted a virtual progress and completion review on 6 November 2023.

Among those discussed during the review were projects focused on data-driven technologies to help decision-makers at the DA make informed policy decisions that support the development of the agriculture sector. These include: Survey on costs and returns of palay by the Philippine Statistics Authority; Assessment of the digital tools for data-driven decision making on rice-based agri-food systems being implemented by the International Rice Research Institute; and OneRicePh:Demand-Driven Product Development and Deployment in Target Market Segments 2023-University of the Philippines Los Baños’ (UPLB) and Philippine Rice Research Institute’s components.

Subjected to completion review were outscaling of rice-based technologies projects of DA-Cagayan Valley. Five farming systems researches implemented in different areas of the region were assessed in terms of adoption and impact. These are rice+Muscovy duck in Nueva Vizcaya; rice+poultry in rainfed areas of Iguig, Cagayan and saline areas of Aparri, Cagayan; rice+duck in Claveria, Cagayan; upland rice-based farming system in Jones, Isabela; and rice+duck in open source pump irrigated areas in Ilagan City and Tumauini, Isabela.

As reported, the technologies scaled out have directly benefited the rice farmers by increasing their productivity and income. The evaluation also emphasized the importance of strengthening the link between associations and households involved in rice and duck production, processing and marketing.

Paul Joseph Ramirez of UPLB, Roberto Villa of DA, and Lourdes Marina Espenido of UP Diliman served as evaluators along with the bureau’s technical focals. They shared insights and recommendations to improve, refine, and sustain the technologies. (### Lea B. Calmada)
