BAR staff participates in 2023 ISSAAS Int’l Scientific Congress

Key officials and staff of the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR), led by assistant director Joell H. Lales, participated in the opening and Plenary Scientific Sessions of the ISSAAS (International Society for Southeast Asian Agricultural Sciences) International Scientific Congress and General Assembly 2023 on 8-10 November at Acacia Hotel Manila, Alabang, Muntinlupa City.

With the theme, Integrated Management of Southeast Asian Agricultural Landscapes, the three-day scientific congress featured lectures and scientific discourse covering vast field of agricultural research. The said congress was hosted by the ISSAAS Philippines Chapter in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

The congress focused on four subthemes: 1) Food Security and Managing Agricultural Risks; 2) Soil and Water Conservation in the Agricultural Landscape; 3) Enhancing Climate Resilience of Agricultural systems Across the Landscape; and 4) Adapting to Changing Markets in Agriculture through Market Systems and Incentives.

Among the topics discussed were three DA-BAR supported projects. The project, titled Value Chain Upgrading towards Improving the Calamansi Industry in Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, was presented during the scientific session under subtheme 4. Projects, titled Enhancement and Commercialization of Developed Mungbean-based Food Products in Cagayan Valley and Institutional Edible Landscape Technology Demonstration Gardens as a Tool for Dissemination of Urban Agriculture programs in the Selected DA Regional Field Offices, were among the poster paper presented under subtheme 1. 

DA-BAR staff attended the simultaneous paper presentations wherein they provided insights and recommendations. 

Composed of professionals, researchers, and academics from Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, the ISSAAS was established to strengthen the cooperation of agricultural scientists in the Asian and Southeast Asian regions and to bring together groups of professionals with common interest in agricultural development in the region. (### Ma.
