DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) chief Junel B. Soriano visited the Livestock Resource Center, and Dairy Production and Development Center of DA-MIMAROPA Palawan Research and Experiment Station (PRES) in Puerto Princesa Palawan on 1 September 2023. Joining the director was Agricultural Center chief Librada Fuertes, Dairy Production and Development Farm and Livestock Resource Center OIC Gomer Decano, and Palawan Agricultural Research OIC Danilo Jimenez.

During the visit, Fuertes discussed new goat raising schemes being adopted in the villages. Further, she introduced the Basa tree, a native tree in Palawan which serves as a good alternative source of crude protein for animals, especially during long dry months. The center conducts research to further improve the production of this tree as well as develop local feeds using leaves of the Basa tree.

As a response, Soriano recognized the potential of Basa trees as a viable substitute feed for dairy cows and a forage option for ruminants. Further, he also shared research for development ideas and directions for the center.

The establishment of the Palawan Research and Experiment Station was driven by the specific requirements of the Palawan province, particularly in the realm of agricultural research, development, and extension, aligning with the aims and objectives outlined in the AFMA program. (### Geline Nicole  A.
