DA-BAR funds nationwide deployment of rice seed information system

The DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR) provided funding support to a research for development (R4D) project that shall, beginning July 2023, enhance and deploy the Rice Seed Information System (RSIS) nationwide.

Part of a series of R4D projects, the 2023 project banks on the gains achieved during the 1st and 2nd phase of the RSIS initiative. The first phase, implemented by the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) in 2018 involved the development of the RSIS for use in Central Luzon. The second phase, co-implemented by PhilRice and the Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI), improved the system by enhancing its modules and integrating the related systems already being implemented by the Bureau of Plant Industry. It also saw the need for the system to be scaled up nationwide.

The new project, with the BPI as the lead implementer, will further enhance the modules and applications of the system and then deploy them in BPI regional offices as well as PhilRice branch stations and satellites. The deployment will also entail the acquisition of more hardware that will be used by the participating offices.

The RSIS is an ICT-based platform used for collecting, consolidating, and disaggregating near real-time rice seed production and distribution data at the municipal, provincial, and national levels for sound decision-making of policymakers and key agencies. It is is made more accessible for stakeholders through additional modules, web and mobile applications, such as DA-PhilRice Seed Grower Mobile App (GrowApp), DA-BPI Seed Inspector’s Mobile App (SIApp), Databank Web App, Seed Growers Web Portal, Seed Planner, and Monitoring Web App; and Seed Reserve Web App. (###Lea B.
