DA-Caraga embarks on 2 new R4D projects

To discuss and talk through the deliverables of new projects vis-a-vis set guidelines, DA–Caraga and DA-BAR conducted an inception meeting on 21 July 2023 through google meet.

Tijani B. Auxtero, the project lead of these initiatives, led the discussion of the recently funded projects. The first project is titled “Characterization and Evaluation of Four Local Soybean Cultivars in Caraga Region” which will be implemented in the provinces of Surigao del Sur and Agusan del Sur, while the second project is titled “Corn-Corn-Soybean Cropping System Technology Verification Trial in Caraga Region” which will be implemented in the provinces of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, and Dinagat islands.

The primary objective of the first project is to enhance the four traditional soybean cultivars found in Caraga region, namely: Manchuria Bahug, Miracle, Paypay, and Lakwayan. On the other hand, the second project seeks to improve farmers' income by implementing a crop rotation consisting of 2 cropping cycles of corn and 1 cropping cycle of soybean.

As per Auxtero, the two projects are scheduled for launch this July. She remains optimistic that the projects will progress without difficulties, despite the challenges of unpaved roads leading to the production areas and the critical climatic conditions which can affect soybean growth and development in the region.

During the meeting, Rodolfo N. Panganiban of the DA-National Corn Program suggested that both projects require soil analysis.

“Every cropping, you should have a soil analysis so that you can minimize the use of fertilizer,” Panganiban said.

Moreover, he pointed out that conducting a soil analysis before planting could potentially lead to an increase in yield.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Florites J. Rosales, OIC Chief of DA-Caraga’s Research Division, expressed her gratitude to DA-BAR for providing funding for the project, as well as to the representatives and experts who participated in the inception meeting. (###Alexis B. del Mar)
