DA-BAR support to Southern Tagalog consortium cited

DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) was acknowledged as funding member institution during the Joint 14th Southern Tagalog Agriculture, Aquatic and Resources Research, Development and Extension Consortium (STAARRDEC) and 94th Regional Research and Development Coordinating Council (RRDCC) meeting on July 18, 2023, at the Cavite State University, Indang Cavite.

Director Junel B. Soriano received the recognition on behalf of the bureau and expressed his gratitude to the consortium. In his message, he acknowledged STAARRDEC as an effective avenue for a network of agencies to collaboratively manage and implement regional agriculture and fisheries research for development and extension (R4DE) programs and projects.

Alongside BAR, Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), represented by deputy executive director Dr. Melvin Carlos, received the same recognition.

During the meeting proper, Dr. Soriano proposed to include in the consortium report all DA-BAR funded projects in the region. This is to raise awareness and avoid project duplication. “The bureau’s attendance in the regular meetings of the consortium will also help in that regard… [we can] know the strength of and opportunities for the consortium, [with regard to] R4DE projects for agriculture and fisheries,” he added.

In response, PCAARRD deputy executive director Carlos affirmed Dir. Soriano’s suggestion, noting that “DA-BAR and DOST-PCAARRD have been working closely for a long time”. He also mentioned DA’s efforts to harmonize the implementation of agri-fisheries projects, through its regional R4DE networks.

Dr. Soriano also seized the opportunity to inform the consortium that the agriculture department’s revitalized network, to be now known as the Agriculture and Fisheries Resources, Research and Extension for Development Network, will soon be launched. “We have our own structure in the network and most of the members of the STAARRDEC will be part of this network,” he said.

The joint meeting of STAARRDEC and RRDCC was organized and presided by Dr. Hernando D. Robles, Cavite State University president and RRDCC chairperson. It was attended on-site and virtually by 24 Consortium Member Institutions. (### Lea Calmada)
