Davao R4D facilities to provide appropriate technologies to stakeholders

DA-Davao Region now houses seven research for development (R4D) facilities expected to develop more appropriate technologies to boost farm productivity. These will also help in promoting local products developed out of the technologies generated by research stations.

With funding assistance from DA-BAR and counterparts from the regional office, these facilities seek to address, if not completely resolve, key issues on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

The R4D facilities are the Davao Commercial Agricultural Research Station (DaCARS)-Tissue Culture Laboratory; Davao Region Central Experiment Station (DaRCES)-Mushroom Production Facility and Technology Commercialization Center in Southern Mindanao; Davao Region Upland Agricultural Research Station (DaRUARS)-Plant Genetic Resource (PGR) Center; and Davao Region Research, Development and Extension Network (DARRDEN) Center in Davao City.

The Tissue Culture aims to produce quality planting materials in Davao Oriental and provide equipment intended for tissue culture production that benefit farmers and other stakeholders. To maximize the availability of the building in the development of the station, different activities for the stakeholders and beneficiaries, especially the farmers were conducted. It also houses the Mushroom Laboratory.

Inaugurated in 2017, the mushroom laboratory provides a venue for studies on mushroom characteristics and performs inoculations. It caters to the growing interest in mushroom cultivation in the region. It also provides a venue for training/capacity development. Local Government Units are capacitated and in return capacitate their farmer constituents. During trainings, starter kits are also provided to the participants.

During the pandemic, there was an increase in the number of requests from farmers and LGUs to acquire technical know-how in producing mushroom.

Meanwhile, processing area for value adding products for adlay, cacao, and durian are being conducted in the Technology Commercialization Center.

For a stronger network of regional and provincial collaborators to ensure the harmonization of its research, development and extension undertakings, DaRCES also houses the DARRDEN office.  DA-BAR revitalized the RRDEN for agriculture and fisheries sector in each region-setting the new modality in agenda setting, planning, and formulation.

As the centers cater to researchers, scientists, students, extension workers, farmers, walk-in clients, another noteworthy endeavor of DA-Davao Region is how the DaRUARS provides opportunities for indigenous peoples and people with disabilities to work in the station.

The abovementioned R4D facilities were funded by DA-BAR under its Research Development Grant Program aimed to enhance the capacity and capability of researchers and scientists to generate, upscale, and commercialize technologies through the provision of conducive, modern, and functional agriculture and fisheries R4D infrastructures and facilities, as well as acquisition of up-to-date equipment.
