UN-FAO, DA call for solidarity to achieve healthy and safe food for everyone

DA joined the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN-FAO) to call on government institutions, private sectors, state universities and colleges, and individuals "to work together in solidarity to prioritize the right of all people to food, nutrition, peace and equality," during the World Food Day (WFD) celebration on 17 October 2022 at the DA Central Office, Diliman, Quezon City.

“Let us continue supporting each other and ensure that one day, every living being has enough food to eat. One day, with continuous effort, no one will have to endure poverty or malnutrition,” DA OIC-undersecretary for Administration and Finance and WFD celebration chairperson Jane C. Bacayo said.

FAO assistant representative Tamara P. Duran signified their strong commitment in collaborating with government agencies and partners from different sectors to prioritize the right to food, nutrition, peace, and equality of every Filipino.

“Through the years, the spirit on which the World Food Day and FAO was built upon essentially remained the same. That is, to realize a world free from hunger and malnutrition,” she said.

DA senior undersecretary Domingo F. Panganiban, in his message, underscored that in strengthening the value chain, achieving food security in the country involves compliance to global food safety standards.

“Every Filipino must not mainly have food on the table; they must consume food that is safe—safe from harmful substances and other factors that compromise the health of our good consumers,” he stated.

Key officials from attached agencies and staff bureaus of DA, Food and Agriculture Organization, and World Food Programme signified their commitment through the ceremonial candle lighting.

As part of the activity, five mothers and ten daycare and elementary pupils from Brgy. Vasra, Quezon city received meat packs and pasteurized milk from DA-National Dairy Administration and DA-National Meat Inspection Service, respectively.

Committee on Agriculture, Food, and Agrarian Reform chairperson and Senator Cynthia A. Villar; DA Policy, Planning, and Regulations undersecretary Mercedita A. Sombilla; and World Food Programme acting country director Dipayan Bhattacharyya also graced the celebration.

DA-BAR was represented by assistant director for Programs Joell H. Lales, assistant director-designate for Research Support Services Dr. Anthony B. Obligado, and Research Program Development Division head Raymond Patrick L. Cabrera.

Held every  October 16, this year’s WFD celebration carried the theme, Leave no one behind. Better production, Better Nutrition, A Better Environment, and a Better Life for All. (### Angelo N. Padura)
