DA-BAR presents R4D updates in ACEF’s midyear assessment

As the lead agency tasked to coordinate and manage the Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (ACEF) Research and Development (R&D) Component, DA-BAR presented the salient accomplishments and latest developments of the program component during the Midyear Cluster Assessment for the Luzon Cluster, and for the Visayas and Mindanao cluster held on 12-15 July and 26-29 July 2022, respectively.

The ACEF’s Program Management Office organized said activity which delved on the implementation of the program for 2022. Members of the ACEF Executive Committee, ACEF Program Management Committee, DA Regional Coordinating Units, and Regional/Provincial Loan Facilitating Teams participated in the activity.

The bureau’s ACEF R4D focal persons Engr. Ethcel P. Libang and Raymond Patrick L. Cabrera led the presentations for the R4D program component.

Since its inception in 2018, the component has funded 94 projects, of which 45 are in support to technology commercialization and 49 on research facilities upgrading. These are implemented by 40 DA partner state universities and colleges.

Technologies from completed projects on technology commercialization include milkfish products, mango-based products, crop residue-based total mixed rations, sweet potato clean planting materials, and blended beverages from seaweeds and selected tropical fruits. These technologies were transferred to selected partner beneficiaries, who were also provided with capacity building activities, and assistance in business plan preparation, product’s regulatory compliances, and market matching and linkaging.

Research facilities assisted for upgrading and renovation include various postharvest and processing centers and facilities, tissue culture laboratories, mushroom laboratories, crop biotechnology and analytical laboratory, animal health laboratory, crop and soil science laboratory, seed storage facility, microbiology laboratory, water quality and fish health laboratory, and geographic information center.

As general agreements and ways forward for the R4D component, a compendium of completed technologies was requested in support of continuity and complementation. For promotion and marketing, a website where farmers and fisherfolk can directly sell their produce was also initiated.

For 2022, the ACEF R&D Program has been allocated with PhP 180 M funding for the implementation of new project proposals. (### Ethcel Princess P. Libang)
