Rice Seed Information System launched

The DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) and DA-Bureau of Plant Industry (BPI) launched the Rice Seed Information System (RSIS) on 7 July 2022 in Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija.

RSIS is an ICT-based platform for collecting, consolidating, and disaggregating near real-time rice seed production and distribution data at the municipal, provincial, and national levels for sound decision making of policymakers and key agencies.

The system features the DA-PhilRice Seed Grower Mobile App, DA-BPI Seed Inspector’s Mobile App, Databank Web App, Seed Growers Web Portal, Seed Planner and Monitoring Web App, and Seed Research Web App.

Funded by DA-BAR and jointly implemented by DA-PhilRice and DA-BPI in 2018, this RSIS project improved the 2013 completed project on near real-time RSIS for Central Luzon, and integrated and harmonized the databases of both implementing agencies.

“Tools such as [RSIS] contribute largely to the rice sector in terms of improving decision making, implementation, and monitoring of rice seed production and distribution programs,” said DA-BAR assistant director-designate for Research Support Services Dr. Anthony B. Obligado, on behalf of director Junel B. Soriano.

Dr. Obligado added, “RSIS will definitely be a great tool and a functional addition to the technologies that our farmers are adopting…We hope that through R4D undertaking such as this, we are able to take advantage of the opportunities and respond to the challenges of the sector.”

Officials and staff from DA-PhilRice, DA-BPI and its National Seed Quality Control Services, DA-BAR, and DA-Information and Communications Technology Service attended the launching physically at the DA-Philrice Crop Biotechnology Center and virtually via Zoom. (### Rena S. Hermoso)
