Soriano visits SOCCSKSARGEN; pushes for stronger R4D collaboration

DA-BAR director Dr. Junel B. Soriano, during his visit in DA-SOCCSKSARGEN on 7-9 June 2022, pushed for stronger research for development (R4D) collaboration through packaging and implementation of various R4D projects in the region.

The five research and experiment stations of the region, TUPI RES, Regional Crop Protection Center (RCPC), Aroman RES, Amas RES and Balindog RES, presented their research projects and products before the director Soriano.

Soriano, who witnessed the deficiencies of each station, challenged them to create a project proposal highlighting each of the RES’ main commodities and submit it to DA-BAR for possible funding. He also challenged the young agriculturists in the stations to also do it, since they are the future of the RES they are working for.

“The DA-BAR is always ready to fund and support R4D projects and programs. We need to develop agri-fisheries technologies to sustain production to ensure food security,” director Soriano said.

Director Soriano also made a courtesy call to DA SOCCSKSARGEN OIC-regional executive director Dennis R. Arpia. They talked about how to empower the R4D in the region and the possibility of partnering through the Yamang Lupa: Sustainable Community-Based Action R4DE for Livelihood Enhancement, Upliftment, and Prosperity (YL: SCALE UP) Program.

DA-BAR chief also met with the Koronadal, South Cotabato mayor Eliordo U. Ogena. During their informal meeting, they talked about strengthening and further empowering the R4D in the city in order to help the LGU attain their food security.

“We appreciate the extended help from the national government. Food security is what we are aiming for here. But along with that, we are also aiming to empower the livelihood of the farmers and fishers in Koronadal City,” said Mayor Ogena.

Soriano expressed his full support to Mayor Ogena and assured that the national government through the DA will move along with the Koronadal LGU in their shared goal of empowering R4D in the city.

The DA-BAR chief also added that he will ask other bureaus outside DA to consider the Koronadal City as a model city and convince them to bring in their programs to speed up the process of making Mayor Ogena’s vision into reality. (### Kathleen Mae B. Bulquerin)
