As a representative of the Cacao Growers Association, Vilma Gimao is one of the farmer cooperators partnered under the project “Community-Based Participatory Action Research (CPAR) on Cacao + Pinakbet Vegetables under Coconut-Based Farming Systems in Polillo, Quezon” that provided the farmers with interventions on the application of vermicompost fertilizers and grafted cacao.

Planting and production of cacao became widespread as the number of adopters in their area also increased. Almost 10,000 seedlings of cacao were ordered every month from the farmers. With the goal of increasing crop productivity and income of farmers thru intercropping coconuts with cacao and pinakbet vegetables, the said CPAR project contributed in the improvement of their town’s cacao production and vegetable selling which then resulted in an increase in their income.

All of these were initiated thru CPAR, one of the DA-BAR's banner programs that aims to empower farming and fishing communities through mature and relevant technologies. Utilizing the community-based approach, CPAR is geared toward verifying the technical and economic feasibility of technologies in specific locations and at the farmers’ level to scale out for widespread adoption.

A member of the Namnama Farmers’ Association of Brgy. Calautit in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur— Robert Tubon is one of the farmer cooperators partnered under the project “Community-based Participatory Action Research (CPAR) on Integrated Rice - Corn - Corn / Mungbean + Cattle Fattening Farming System in Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur” that provided the farmers with water pumps for irrigation and other associated technologies, thereby improving the yield of rice and corn in the community.

Other interventions introduced by the project include technology packages on rice and corn production such as integrated nutrient management, integrated pest management, crop residue utilization, goat raising, as well as trainings on the production of organic feeds and fertilizers which facilitated for the farmer cooperators to become producers and suppliers of vermicast and vermiworm in the province.

As the president of the Irrigators Association and organizer of the Organic Vegetable Growers Association, Roberto Guevarra from Brgy. Punta is one of the farmer cooperators partnered under the project “Community-Based Participatory Action Research (CPAR) on Organic Lakatan-based Farming Systems in Looc, Romblon” that provided the farmers with interventions on the application of organic inputs (e.g. vermicompost, Effective Microorganism Activated Solution (EMAS), molasses), intercropping of papaya, and establishment of windbreaks which improved their production; hence, increasing their income.

With the goal of demonstrating the package of technology for tissue-culture lakatan and of developing a sustainable supply of organic banana, the said CPAR project contributed in the development of the farmers’ area into that of an agri-tourism site which improved the farmer cooperators’ livelihood.

Mery An Factor from Brgy. Agpudlos, Romblon in MIMAROPA Region is one of the farmer cooperators partnered under the project “Community-based Participatory Action Research (CPAR) on Cassava-Based Farming system in Odiongan, Romblon,” which helped the municipality’s farmers to have access on high yielding varieties of cassava, production and postproduction equipment, and other cash crops as intercrops, thus improving their productivity and income.

As mentioned by Factor, the CPAR project specifically assisted the farmer cooperators on various mechanization related technologies such as cassava grater and cassava chipper. Furthermore, the intercropping of legumes like mungbean and peanut also contributed to their improved earnings.

“Itinuturing po naming napakalaking tulong ang CPAR sa aming barangay. Nakapagtanim po kami ng glutinous corn at cassava, at nakapag-intercrop din po ng legumes gaya ng munggo at mani. Ngayon nakakapagbenta na po kami ng green corn na nakadagdag po sa aming kita at natuto na rin po kaming gumamit ng mga high yielding varieties ng cassava. Accredited at umaangat na po ‘yung aming organization dahil po sa CPAR,” she said.
