Banana Stalk and Water Lily R&D Projects Review

n response to the directives of Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol to conduct research studies on the utilization of dehydrated banana stalks and water lily, as extender for ruminant feeds to be mixed with traditional and commercial feed ingredients, and as source of fiber, the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) conducted the first quarter progress review and onsite visits 14-15 August 2017 at the Philippine Carabao Center (PCC), Science City of Muñoz in Nueva Ecija. The activity aimed to assess and evaluate the progress of the project and to polish planned activities for the implementation in the succeeding quarters.

The project is in collaboration with the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU), University of Southern Mindanao (USM), Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) and PCC. PSAU and USM are focused on goats in Luzon and Mindanao, respectively. Meanwhile, UPLB is focused on dairy cattle, PCC on buffaloes, and PhilFIDA on banana fiber. ###
