BAR Seminar on Biofertilizer Technologies

20 July 2017
BAR, Quezon City

Over 300 attendees registered in the Seminar Series of the Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) held on 20 July 2017 featuring topics on biofertilizer technologies and product procedures in making liquid fertilizers.

Dr. Mannix S. Pedro of the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH) of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) presented two topics: 1) Biofertilizer Technologies for Sustainable Agriculture and its other Beneficial Usage; and 2) Protocol Improvement and Product Development of Liquid Organic Fertilizers from Fermented Plant Extract. Also part of his presentation was a demonstration on how to make fermented plant juice (FPJ) from kakawate or Madre de cacao (Gliricidia sepium).

A discussion on “Fermented Plant Extract Using Fish Hydrolysate” was also presented by Ms. Luz B. Opeña, also from BIOTECH-UPLB. Fish hydrolysate, is ground fish turned into liquid plant fertilizer. It is high in nitrogen which is excellent in promoting plant growth. Specifically, Ms. Opeña taught the seminar attendees on how to make fish hydrolysate from “galunggong” (round scad).

All the topics being featured in the BAR Seminar Series are supported and funded by the bureau. ###

For the month of July, BAR features biofertilizer technologies in its seminar series.
