Borlaug CAST Communication Award

The Borlaug CAST Communication Award is presented annually for outstanding achievement by a scientist, engineer, technologist, or other professional working in the agricultural, environmental, or food sectors for contributing to the advancement of science in the public policy arena. Primary consideration will be given to candidates who are actively engaged in promoting agriculture through research, teaching, extension, or mass communication; who have made significant contributions to their discipline or field; and who demonstrate a passionate interest in communicating the importance of agriculture to policymakers, the news media, and the public.

Nominees must have demonstrated their ability to communicate by written material; public presentations; and/or the use of television, radio, or other social media. They should be recognized by their peers as scientists who have made significant contributions in their professional fields.

The award is dedicated to Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, "The Man Who Fed the World" and author of CAST publication #1, and to Dr. Charles A. Black, first CAST President, first Executive Vice President, and member of the founding committee of CAST. These two men embody the passion and dedication to agricultural research and technology that this award is designed to reward.

Nomination and Selection

Nominations are now open for the 2016 Borlaug CAST Communication Award, an honor that recognizes professionals actively working in the agricultural, environmental, or food sectors who are promoting agricultural science in the public policy arena. This award has become an influential component in the efforts to keep agricultural issues and programs in the public eye and in front of national and world policymakers.

Completed nomination packets must be e-mailed to the CAST office (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.; subject line: 2016 Borlaug CAST Award). The packets must include copies of each of the following:

  • the completed nomination form
  • a curriculum vitae of the nominee
  • a written statement of the candidate’s ability to disseminate research findings to the public that includes at least one item from the following list
    • a list of pertinent publications
    • public speaking engagements
    • television and/or radio appearances
    • other media activities within the past 6 years
  • a minimum of 5 letters of support in which the references assess the candidate’s ability to communicate science to the public

Announcements of the Award winner will be published on the CAST website, circulated to CAST members, and distributed to scientific and agricultural news media. The Award consists of a custom bronze created for CAST by internationally noted sculptor Jerry Palen, a cash award, and a travel allowance for the recipient to present his/her message at a major conference. The custom bronze entitled “A World Supported by Plants and Animals” will be inscribed with the winner’s name and the date of the Award.

CAST is responsible for the selection of the individual to receive the Borlaug CAST Communication Award. Evaluation of the nominees will be made by a committee from the CAST Board, appointed by the CAST president. The Award recipient will be invited to attend the presentation event and speak about the key issues on which he or she has focused their research efforts and communication skills. A written copy of the speech will be requested for use in publicizing the Award. The location and date of the presentation may vary annually.

Call for Nominations for NAST Awards

The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the government's highest recognition and advisoty bosy on science and technology, will give the following awards and recognition to deserving scientist on 10 July 2014 in Manila, Philippines:
      • OUTSTANDING YOUNG SCIENTIST (OYS) are given to young Filipino scientist (must not be 41 years old within January to December in the year of the award) who have made significant contributions to science and technology.
      • TWAS PRIZE FOR YOUNG SCIENTIST IN THE PHILIPPINES is an award given to an outstanding young Filipino scientist (must not be 41 years old within January to December in the year of the award) by the Academy (NAST) and the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS).

        One award each year, consisting og US $2,000 and a plaque, is given in the selected discipline ofr the year - biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics. For 2014, tghe TWAS Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines will be given for Biology. for 2015, 2016, 2017, the award will be for Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
      • NAST TALENT SEARCH FOR YOUNG SCIENTIST is a project of NAST to encourage young people (must be 35 years older or younger within January to December in the year of the award) to pursue a career in science
        Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the best three scintific paper presenters. The paper which will be presented may be basic or applied research.
      • OUTSTANDING SCINTIFIC PAPER AWARDS are given annualy for papers published in the Philippine scientific or technical journals within five years preceeding the award.
        Papers are judged based on the quality of their content, contribution to science and technology, clarity of presentation and thoroughness of documentation.
      • OUTSTANDING BOOK and/or MONOGRAPH AWARDS are given annually for books and/or monographs published by Filipino publishers based in the Philippines. Majority of the authors of publication should be Filipino.

        The grand prize winner wll receive PhP50,000 and a plaque of recognition from the Academy. Winners of special citations will receive plaques of recognition.
      • NAST ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AWARD is intended to recognize outstanding scientific and technological research works that contribute to environmental protection and conservation.

      • NAST AWARDS FOR OUTSTANDING RESEARCH IN TROPICAL MEDICINEis intended to recognize research work that contribute to the advancement of country's knowledge and practice in tropical medicine. The award aims to honor outstanding researcher contributions in the field of tropical medicine and recognize the role of scientific research in the country.
      • DR. GEMINIANO T. DE OCAMPO VISIONARY AWARDS FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH is intended to recognize clinician researchers who have created the vision for medical research in the country through their outstanding work in medical research that have blazed and/or pioneered the trail for medical innovations and health research and development. The research should have created and traversed new frontiers in medicine through significant contributions to the fund of medical knowledge or the advancement of clinical practice in the country and have significantly impacted on the lives of the Filipino people.

Deadline for submission of nominations for all NAST is on the last working day of November every year except for the Dr. Geminiabno T. de Ocampo Visionary Award for Medical Research with deadline July 31 every year.

Papers fot the Scientific Posters Seeions on Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, and Social Sciences are invited. The maximum number of poster to be presented by an author shall be limited to three (3) poster only, i.e., ONE (1) as MAJOR AUTHOR and TWO (2) as CO-AUTHOR. The paper must be (a) original or have not been presented ibn any other forum, events or competition, (b) minimum of undergrauate thesis, no highscholl science projects or class laboratory experiments, and (c) no preliminary data. The author should provide a certification of originality for each entry.

The format specified below shall be followed

  • Paper size: 6" x 9"
    Margins: Top and Bottom = 1 in.; Right and Left = 0.75 in
  • Font type:Times New Roman
  • Title (centered, bold, upper and lower case, font size: 12)
  • Author(s) (centered, upper and lower case, font size; 11); authors should use first full names; presenting author underlined with asterisk indicating corresponding author; major/main author name in bold face
  • Affilication (centered, upper and lower case); if authors are from different institutions indicate with superscripts respective affiliations. Include address of the presenting author to enable interesting parties to contact authors; include telephone, fax and email.
  • Abstract body (justified, font size: 11)
  • Keywords (justified in lower case
  • Word format (97-2003 version)

Guidelines in preparing abstracts

  1. Abstract should fit in one page
  2. The introduction part should contain the scope and purpose of the work in 2-3 short sentences only.
  3. The experimental approach should be described briefly.
  4. Only highlights of results should be presented, which should be quantitative if possible, or as the nature of the paper permits.
  5. Uncommon acronyms should be spelled out the first time they are used; if several acronyms are used, they shoudl be listed with their meanings at the end of abstract.
  6. Only major conclusions should be stated.
  7. No more than five keywords should be mentioned.
  8. A list of references must not be included.

Abstracts that do not follow abovementioned format and guidelines will be returned automatically to the author(s).

Authors of accepted/rejected papers will be notified via email starting 05 May 2015 and will be given further instructions on poster presention. Please note that traditional poster shall be the standard entires to the 37th Annual Scientific Meeting Poster Session.
