Climate Change R4D Program

About the Program

The Climate Change R4D Program of the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research covers specific measures that address challenges and threats posed by the changing weather patterns affecting the livelihood of rural communities and the country’s food security. The R&D program is in support to Republic Act 9729 or the Climate Change Act of 2009 which mandates the mainstreaming of climate change in policy formulation. It follows the policy thrust of the DA Climate Change Program which is anchored on two pillars: mitigation and adaptation, with adaptation as the anchor strategy and mitigation measures as a function of adaptation.

Objective

An integrated agriculture and fishery research and development program that builds and enhances the national and local capacities to minimize risks and reduce the vulnerability of rural communities to variable and changing climate.

R4D Focus

The program prioritizes enhancing the resilience of rural communities to immediate and long-term threats of climate change, and on elevating the quality of technologies to be translated and adopted by farmers and fisherfolk. Possible R4D focus areas include:

  1. Climate Suitability Maps
  2. Climate change impact and resilience studies in production systems
  3. Climate change adaptation and mitigation practices, e.g., climate resilient housing for livestock -raising
  4. Climate risk insurance models
  5. Climate-based extension advisory
